چکیده

The paper discusses the applicability of WKB and Born (small perturbations) approximations in the problem of the backscattering of quantum particles and classical waves by one-dimensional smooth potentials with small amplitudes compared to the energy of the incident particle (above-barrier scattering). Both deterministic and random potentials are considered. The dependence of the reflection coefficient and localization length on the amplitude and the longitudinal scale of the scattering potential is investigated. It is shown that perturbation and WKB theories are inconsistent in the above-barrier backscattering problem. Not only the solutions but the regions of validity of both methods as well depend strongly on the details of the potential profile, and are individual for each potential. For deterministic potentials, a simple criterion that allows determining the boundary between the applicability domains of WKB and Born approximations is found. r 2004 Elsevier B.V. Light scattering by cubical particle in the WKB approximation

In this work, we determined the analytical expressions of the form factor of a cubical particle in the WKB approximation. We adapted some variables (size parameter, refractive index, the scattering angle) and found the form factor in the approximation of Rayleigh-Gans-Debye (RGD), Anomalous Diffraction (AD), and determined the efficiency factor of the extinction. Finally, to illustrate our form...

Phase Shift Errors Associated with the WKB Approximation

A numerical technique is presented which yields an exact solution to the one-dimensional scattering problem. The algorithm is used to compute phase shift error curves associated with the WKB approximation. A variety of scattering potentials are considered and cover cases for which the WKB solution varies from extremely good to poor. It is shown that some commonly assumed forms for ionospheric e...

Supersymmetry in Quantum Mechanics

An elementary introduction is given to the subject of Supersymmetry in Quantum Mechanics which can be understood and appreciated by any one who has taken a first course in quantum mechanics. We demonstrate with explicit examples that given a solvable problem in quantum mechanics with n bound states, one can construct new exactly solvable n Hamiltonians having n-1,n-2,...,0 bound states. The rel...

SWKB Quantization Rules for Bound States in Quantum Wells

In a recent paper by M A F Gomes and S K Adhikari(J.Phys.(B30) ,5987.(1997)), a matrix formulation of the Bohr-Sommerfeld (mBS) quantization rule has been applied to the study of bound states in one-dimensional quantum wells. They have observed that the usual Bohr-Sommerfeld (BS) and the WentzelKramers-Brillouin (WKB) quantization rules give poor estimates of the eigen energies of the two confi...

Asymptotics of Resonances for a Schrödinger Operator with Matrix Values

We obtain the asymptotics for the counting function of resonances for a matrix valued Schrödinger operator in dimension one. This theorem is a generalization of the result of Zworski [Zwo87], using ideas from Froese [Fro97], both of which only treat the scalar case. There has been much work in proving upper and lower bounds for the number of resonances in various situations (for a review of thi...
